This is not a normal website, it is fuelled by passion and fun!
At last, I hear you say, a website for The Yew Tree. Has Tim finally come round? No, a very clever and bright employee (Attie) has kicked my backside into the 21st Century. (Is that where we are?) To me all the action is downstairs with the customers (because without you the pub is merely a few walls and lots of pictures!)
Tim (that is me) is just an 18 year old music lover in a 41 year old body, who loves life, the industry and people, and who is living out his lifelong dream.
There is no mission statement to The Yew Tree other than:
- Good honest food
- Great local beers
- Fine wines (lots of choice), and most importantly
- Good fun for one and all
Life is too short, so enjoy it while you can - I do!!
Set in glorious Hampshire countryside, (the pub is opposite one of the most picturesque cricket pitches ever seen; going through the gate is like entering a fantasy world). Lower Wield is 20 minutes drive from Winchester, Basingstoke and Alton and 5 minutes from Four Marks, but it is still very much in the countryside. The birds chirp and the sheep baaaa with just the occasional car. Beautiful peace.
Whenever possible nearly everything is sourced from Hampshire or the neighbouring counties (butchers from Hook and Romsey; fruit & veg from Basingstoke; fish from Andover). Hampshire, Sussex and Wiltshire brewers are all on good form with Triple FFF holding the house beer and 20 brewers on a rotation for the guest ale. Whichever bright spark said real ales were dying is definitely eating his words with all the small breweries flourishing and the big boys dying off. It means it is brilliant, as I can offer a large choice of interesting ales for my discerning customers. Long live Beer!
Sourcing food as locally as possible and always reflecting the seasons with lighter salads in the warmer months, and hearty meat feasts in the cooler months but still keeping all the regular favourites to avoid uproar. Cajun chicken salad or beef and horseradish burgers always prove very successful over the warmer months, but for the colder weather so the menu changes, a half shoulder of lamb or beef bourlash will hopefully set your winter taste buds tingling.
The wines are sourced from 10 suppliers, offering choice and value with plenty available by the glass; mainly based around the New World with some classic Burgundies at very reasonable prices (Meursault at £27.50 and Gevrey Chambertain at £30). The list changes twice a year and is not over-serious, a little like me!!
Pubs like this do not run without lots of help and I owe lots of thanks to all staff and customers alike (even I only have one pair of hands). There are too many to thank, except for a special few: Julia, my wife, my driving force, understanding ear and soul mate.... George (he must be a mug - he lent me the money), my Mum and my gorgeous children, Alfie and Isabel, and Mr. Graeme Jameson, who even in Heaven (he was a naughty boy!!) looks over me - an inspiration.
If you are reading this and thinking "Wow, it must be great to run a pub". Beware, this lifestyle is not your average one, long and unsocialable hours together with having to smile most of the day is enough for most. But if you love a dream, embrace it, and give it 200%. It is well worthwhile.
